but I managed to get a couple of things completed for this group show...

 which is still open at Spiral Gallery in Bega
(I think? see... I'm not paying much attention)

I put together a box of double-sided printed postcards
from what I'm referring to as the 'bound knowledge' series

(yes I'll post all 8 designs shortly -
hint - they have all been posted on my insta feed if you'd like to take a looksee)

 I also created 2 sculptural booky pieces for the show....

'Tacit Knowledge'

 Tacit Knowledge: repurposed bible, hand-twined string, crocheted cotton,
found feather, dried seed pod, cows tail hair, metal sprocket, glass.

"Tacit knowledge is the kind of knowledge
that is difficult to transfer to another person
by means of writing it down or verbalizing it."*
Riding a bike, knitting, making bread,
playing a musical instrument, speaking a language
are all examples of tacit knowledge.

'Explicit knowledge'

Explicit knowledge: repurposed bible, hand-twined string, found feathers, 

satin ribbon, metal washers, metal sprocket, glass.

 

 "Explicit knowledge is knowledge that can be readily articulated,
codified, accessed and verbalized.
It can be easily transmitted to others.
Most forms of explicit knowledge can be stored in certain media.
The information contained in encyclopedias and textbooks
are good examples of explicit knowledge."*

'codex interruptum' - the interrupted book

some more pics for all of you that can't get to the show....

(nicely bounded by the strange crappy coloured cement floor insert)  

on the right hand wall - as well as photographic works that you can't see (a girlie has to keep just a little bit of mystery...) there's a skinny little shelf that seems purpose-built for 'serpens volumen' arcus pluvius (it wasn't btw)...  above is 'virtus libris' (the virtuous book) and below is a de/recontruction of its (dirty) components - 'virtus ex libris' (virtues from the book)

if we quickly rush back to the front door again....

to our left we have various photographic work along with the installation of ‘panton volvit plenus orbis’ – (everything turns full circle) that has my carved reclaimed high school 'Gardeners' text..... 'ars gratia artis' perched on a plinth

(I do hope my old high school teachers don't come and look inside the cover of this unreturned textbook..... if they spy the 'Bega High School' stamp they may try to claim the work... hee hee hee)

at the back of the space on the left is my little 'book' shop with ‘novus libri scientia’  (The New book of Knowledge) overhead.... (I'm so pleased I included this little celebration of the craft of book binding... not only will it no doubt be the only place where I may recoup some of the exhibition costs.... it is a celebration of craft and bookyness amongst scenes of book destruction!)

I served huge platters of fresh fruit (mmmm yummy watermelon) and my mummy made her world infamous corn relish dip (very retro, as one arty friend pointed out) 

 

a small collection of mostly non-arty folk attended 

(and I thank every single one of you for braving the hid-e-ous conditions)

 

 my little 'book' shop was quite a hit

My favourite thing over the past few days of set up has been young kids coming past and spying the little paper boats in the window - they then come to the doorway to peek inside.... sometimes I see the same young ones returning (dragging reluctant parents along for the ride).... it's great to see them curious and thinking....

My least favourite thing has been the damn sticky stuff on the back of the magnarts (the magnetic hanging gizmos..... I'll show and tell more on these another time for the uninitiated).... in the durn humidity the sticky stuff hasn't been sticking! eeegads!

My favourite peeps have been (and I thanks them from the bottom of my weary little body): my spiralette curator - kimmy (heart of gold, patience of a saint, talented as all get-out); Chris and Rob (and shop girls) at Fletchers Bega (you guys are the best.... really... the best); Poppy and Emma and Tanja and old mates and new mates for making it to opening night.

and of course - de family (where would I be without my loving, caring, patient, giving, spectacular mob.....?)

now..... on to the next huge job...

meroogal at spiral

As I headed into Bega last night for the opening of the Meroogal Exhibition at Spiral a light drizzle started to fall - and gardener/farmer that I am my spirits began to lift markedly!

(there's my piece 'Fahrenheit 451' by the door - offering a warm entry)

Spiral is quite a small space - so hanging even a small selection of works from the Meroogal Womens Art Award is a big challenge. Most of the works selected to show at Spiral were prize winning pieces and/or works by local artists. The exhibition was opened by local artist Veronica O'Leary with help from Spiral Gallery's indominable Anna Senior (that's her below in the background with magnificent red vest.... interesting outfits are the norm from Anna - before her time here in the valley Anna worked in costumes on films like 'My Brilliant Career' .... and I think she's rather brilliant herself!)



I enjoyed this pared down selection of work - and seeing work by the fellow local artists - the lovely b&w concertina booklet below is by Madeline Meyer one of the 23 local artists selected for the inital exhibition at Shoalhaven (I've been reliably told that Madeline's works has been selected for the full tour... from the tale told, 3 locals have had work selected for the entire tour - and apparently I'm one of them - we'll see...)



One piece of news that is completely reliable is... (drum roll please)... HHT has just acquired an edition of 'Fahrenheit 451' for its collection - WOW. I'm thrilled that the piece is going to a public collection - and the work is an interesting choice for the Historic Houses Trust don't you think?

I'll drop another note or two about coming editions of work in the next while - before that though I want to show you my favourite piece in this exhibition....



... it is also by my absolute favourite person in the whole wide world - this is my bestest friend Margie (she's more like a wonderful big sister really) - I managed to get her to stand in front of her work (it's the one closest to camera) 'In memory of Henry David Thoreau' - an exquisite forged bookstand (Margi is one of the few female traditional blacksmiths in this country - she's an amazing artisan) with a little gem of a booklet (also by M) placed on it. In the booklet are tiny treasures that she has collected and saved or captured in photo form - like curly leaves, feathers, butterfly wings - as well as poems she has penned whilst bushwalking and wool she has spun and dyed from natural materials - it's just a delight.

'insight' @ spiral gallery

I often get so involved in work (life...) that I forget to blog all sort of stuff! Like this - I was invited to join in with Spiral Gallery members for a great and fun exhibition titled 'insight' - its on now at the gallery (until march 12... I think... exact dates are another of those things I tend to forget...)

The idea of 'insight' was those things that inspire the creative process - items or collections from the home or studio...

I took the whole thing rather literally - and I took in both my little piece 'debut in pink' (its had a few outings now) and the photo that inspired the whole series... still in its original frame ( shhhhh - mum and dad are away and don't know I've nicked it off the sidetable - I'll get it back before they return... I hope)


and yes that's me in my official pic from the 1971 Cobargo Debutante Ball where I was flowergirl - ahhhhh my first (and many argue final) true girlie moment - look at those curls.... juxtaposed against the dead straight fringe (I had/have dead straight hair - my mother believed curls were superior to straight hair... thanks mum) - she also always insisted on hacking all my hair off (this was the early '70s - era of the ultra long hair... think marcia brady.... thanks mum - way to make me popular)..... the comic/tragic tales of my childhood were central to the works of last year.

you've gotta laugh about it all - 'cause there's no going back and doing it again (save me!)
