wombats

ok so its running off in the opposite direction and not sitting nicely for a picture - but here is the young wombat I disturbed whilst taking pics of Sams Creek. The creek is a favourite home for wombats (and unfortunately many meet there end crossing the highway)... this little fellow actually has its burrow right beside the road - I mean right beside the road - its only 2m from the tar! So far its figured out how to go under the bridge to cross the road...

Most wombat burrows are on the sides of the creek - that's one there... snuggled under the roots of a she-oak.

where or what is sams creek?

anywhere I go - either out in the physical world or here in cyberville I'm always talking about coming from 'Sams Creek' and it struck me - most folk - including some very dear friends have no idea who, what or where Sams Creek is in the scheme of things...

well this is Sams Creek as you see it if you are hurtling down the Princes Hwy, far south coast of NSW, Australia....

blink and you miss it....

but I know the creek in a very different way - and I thought I'd share a few pics of the creek as I see and know it.... photos can't capture the magic of a place... but as I've been the only member of my family to live here on the property (been coming here for a lifetime - living here since 1988) I'm one of the few folk who ever gets to see the place.....

the trees are river she-oaks (allocasurina I think is still the latin for them... it keeps changing, damn botanists) - there are some magnificent large old beauties lining the banks... you should hear the sound of the breeze through the she-oak needles - eerie and wonderful

see how there is a flow of water at the moment (just a trickle 'waterfall' over the granite outcrop) - in times of flood (and it's been a while) the water rushes over the rocks in a roar that I hear from the house... awesome and awful at the same time... so much damage to the fragile creek banks when it floods.

In case you can't tell -
I love love love love love this place....
